Kendrick Lamars Good Kid, M.A.A.D City Enters The Billboard Again After 8 Years

Kendrick Lamar has easily become one of the most respected members of the hip-hop community over the last ten years. Hot New Hip Hop reported today that one of his albums from 8 years ago, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City has reentered the Billboard charts after its release nearly a decade ago.

Kendrick Lamar has easily become one of the most respected members of the hip-hop community over the last ten years. Hot New Hip Hop reported today that one of his albums from 8 years ago, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City has reentered the Billboard charts after its release nearly a decade ago.

The outlet says Lamar was praised for his storytelling ability, on the level of someone like Nas or The Notorious BIG, whereas the “motivation” and the “message” was more like 2Pac or even Ice Cube, for that matter. Fans will remember when it came out in October 2012, and while it was successful at that time, it has only grown in popularity.

Reportedly, the Billboard Top Album Sales chart includes some of the highest-selling projects currently, but the list didn’t feature streams at the time of its inception. Beginning in 1991, Billboard started the Top Album Sales chart in collaboration with SoundScan which is now known as Nielsen Music.

Billboard finally changed the metric in 2014 when they started including streams in the mix, and Hot New Hip Hop says the artist’s record climbed from number 23 to number 9 after it reportedly sold 8,000 copies in the United States during the last week of December.

Interestingly, all of the album sales were in vinyl, as well, making it an especially unique way for it to make it back on the charts. Reportedly, the holiday season saw a big increase in vinyl sales, and with Kendrick Lamar‘s popularity, there’s no question some people got the record as a way to celebrate the holiday season.

These days, Kendrick Lamar isn’t nearly as active in the music world, but it makes sense, considering his last record, D*MN, was released to massive critical and commercial success. Since then, Kendrick has remained silent on social media and rarely makes public appearances.

In recent news, his team tweeted that Kendrick wouldn’t be coming out with a new record anytime soon because people “wouldn’t appreciate it.”

It’s hard to say if this tweet is representative of the truth, however, because it seems unlikely that Lamar won’t come out with a new project sometime soon.
