A 23-year-old man has described the terrifying moment he was allegedly held at gunpoint while picking up a Snapchat date in Sydney’s south.
Emergency services were called to Mi Mi Street in Oatley about 10.25pm on September 7, following reports a car had crashed into a parked car.
Paramedics treated the 23-year-old male driver for minor injuries before he was taken to St George Hospital as a precaution.
Police were told that the man had allegedly been held up at gunpoint in what appears to be a failed carjacking attempt.
Video taken by a neighbour in the moments after shows the victim detailing what he alleges occurred in front of the wrecked car.
“All of a sudden, two guys jump in the backseat, one has a f**king shotgun, the other guy has a knife,” the 23-year-old said.
In a post shared to social media, the neighbour explains that he was about to head to bed when he heard a loud bang outside.
“I ran out and all these neighbours, all of us in pajamas, [are] staring at this Honda Accord, keys still in the ignition, doors open, no driver, that just did a head-on collision with my car,” he wrote.
“It turned into a cordoned-off crime scene with my Mazda 3 a total write-off.
“The guy who smashed into our car was apparently being held at gunpoint after arriving for what he thought was a hookup via Snapchat with some woman.”
As he arrived to pick up his date, police say a woman got inside the car before a man allegedly approached the drivers side window with a shotgun and threatened the driver.
The man allegedly stole his mobile phone before the woman fled the car.
In an effort to escape, the 23-year-old put his foot on the accelerator and crashed into the parked car.
“He ran off, cut and bruised to find a house with a phone...he then came back about 15 minutes later, and we were all screaming at him while he was pleading his innocence,” the neighbour said.
Speaking with NCA NewsWire, he said the man was covered with cuts and did not appear under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
Surveillance footage from a home across the street shows a group of about five people in the street two hours before the alleged incident, with one appearing to hold a firearm.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.
Anyone with information about the matter or has any available mobile phone/dashcam footage is urged to contact St George Police Area Command or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
